So you’ve spent a little too much time on the internet and now you’re head-over-heels in love with overlanding and the lifestyle that comes with it. Dozens of blogs posting hundreds of photos glamorizing overlanding makes it feel obtainable and easy. But is it?
Well, if you price a decked-out, specialty-built overlanding vehicle, you’ll find they don’t come cheap. In fact, it’s not uncommon for folks to spend six digits on a purpose-built off-roading vehicle. So, what does that mean for people like us who want to chase the adventure, but are not equipped with the budget of a Silicon Valley business mogul? We have the answer and it’s surprisingly simple. As most true overlanders will tell you, it really doesn’t take much and reliability is key.
The Chevrolet Silverado has built a legacy as a dependable and long-lasting full-size pickup. With strength, capability and advanced available technology, his, among many other reasons, is what makes the Chevy Silverado our pick as the perfect canvas for your dream #AdventureMobile.
We acquired our Mobil 1 / Chevrolet Performance Silverado #AdventureMobile* in 2014 and have since used it to take ourselves on some pretty exciting road trips. We used it to pick up our ‘56 Bel-Air from Memphis, Tennessee, participated in the world’s largest burnout and have taken it on two HOT ROD Power Tours (third is coming up), among other things. But, our latest excursion with the Silverado took us camping in some backcountry woods in North Carolina. This is the trip that solidified the Silverado as our favorite #AdventureMobile thanks to its symphony of capability, comfort and convenience.
Chevrolet Performance’s legendary lineup of EcoTec3 engines uses three proven fuel-saving technologies — Active Fuel Management, Direct Injection and Continuously Variable Valve Timing — for impressive efficiency** with powerful capability. For the perfect balance between power and acceleration, Chevrolet offers an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Our Mobil 1 / Chevrolet Performance Silverado #AdventureMobile is equipped with the 6.2L EcoTec3 engine producing 420 horsepower with 460 lb./ft. of torque. That sort of power being distributed to all four tires can help get you through almost any off-road terrain - a perfect tool for the true adventurer. Plus, we were very impressed with the truck’s available Hill Start Assist feature which detects when the truck is on a 5 percent grade or more and holds the brakes momentarily or until we pressed the accelerator preventing rollback. We found this feature especially useful when climbing or descending steep inclines awaiting our spotters outside the truck to help guide us through tight spots.
During day-to-day driving as well as trail riding, we’re always impressed with how luxurious the interior is during commute. Silverado features triple-seal inlaid doors and an aerodynamic windshield that work harmoniously to help reduce noise in the cabin, while dual-resilient foam seats offer long-lasting comfort. We love to soak into our front leather-appointed, perforated heated and cooled seats during longer trips where for hours we can sit and not once feel uncomfortable.
You can tell when driving these trucks Chevrolet had the driver in command when it comes to ergonomics. It’s as if everything you need during a normal trip is right at your fingertips. We especially love the available steering wheel controls where we can adjust the volume of our music pumping through our available BOSE® premium sound system. The steering wheel controls also allows you to answer phone calls, control the available Chevrolet MyLink display, change Driver Information Center settings, set cruise control and enable available safety features.
You just never realize how useful a truck can be until you own/use one. After an evening of trail riding it was time to set up camp and shoot some photos as dusk turned to darkness. Climbing in and out of the bed for gear was such a breeze thanks to Chevrolet’s Cornerstep Rear Bumper. Throw a foot in the bumper and use the hand assists built into the bed sides and hoist yourself up. Have something easily accessible in the bed from the rear of the truck? Just pull the tailgate handle and let it drop - Chevrolet’s EZ Lift & Lower mechanism catches the tailgate and lets it down gently. This is extremely convenient for when your hands are full and need to load the bed.
We never realized just how much we enjoy our optional rear vision camera until we were in some tight trails. There were only two of us on this excursion, so the passenger would hop out when we were stopped to spot the front of the truck, and the driver would use the rearview camera to help with backing.
When night fell, we were impressed with all the factory lighting available from Silverado. When grabbing gear from the bed, we simply pressed the button in the cabin to activate the bedlight - a feature you won’t fully appreciate until you need it. Inside, there are enough USB ports to keep a family’s electronic devices charged during a camping trip (up to six USB ports and four auxillary power outlets) - plus a 110V power outlet for the larger devices.
The Silverado is a capable adventure mobile in stock form, but we opened Chevrolet Performance Parts Catalog for a few essential items to help protect our truck as well as make things even better. We feel it’s almost essential to get some good floor mats to help protect your new interior while overlanding, so we picked up these. We also looked to help protect our bed so we opted for Chevrolet’s bed liner and tailgate liner. Read about those here. Once we lifted the truck, we quickly looked to Chevrolet for some side assist steps that were easy to install. See those here.
