Who’s looking to gain some extra horsepower for their small-block Chevrolet motor? Well Chevrolet Performance engineer Tom Bierbower’s got just what you need to add an extra 20-40hp to your SBC: cast-iron Vortec Cylinder Heads (P/N 12558060).

“The Vortec Cylinder heads have been out since 1996. It was a production head. As far as small-block heads go they surpass the old camel-hump, or double-hump, performance heads. It out performs those, they’re inexpensive and they just work really well. It’s a fantastic, affordable option for anybody building a streetcar.

” These will work for any 1955 and newer small-block V-8 with the exception of later-style LT1/LT4 engines with reverse-flow cooling. Really any of those early small-blocks will see a 30hp increase vs. the older smog heads or camel-hump heads. It’s got a fast-burn combustion chamber, allowing you to use less spark-timing to get the best torque. They’re just very user friendly, especially in older cars. They do require specific intake manifolds and valve covers that were on some of the Gen 1 and Gen 1-E engines. The Gen 1 cars from 1986 forward and Gen 1-E truck and cars from 1996 and up take intake manifolds with the 8-bolt attachment. The valve covers are the center-bolt style valve covers.”
