Chevrolet Performance listens to their customers, and the development of this product is proof of that. After hearing about guys trying to bolt up T56 Super Magnum transmissions to newer LT engines with incorrect installation, Chevrolet Performance jumped in. We sat down with Rusty Sampsel, Development Engineer, Chevrolet Performance Parts, to get more information for you builders looking to make the swap.

You’re obviously heading in the right direction if you already own an LS or modern high performance LT engine, but what’s the next step? If you wish to row your own gears, then you need the T56 Super Magnum six-speed manual transmission (p/n: 19352208). This is the same basic transmission found in the highest performing Camaros of all-time - the Camaro Z/28 and ZL1 models. The T56 Super Magnum is a high-torque capacity TREMEC six-speed manual designed for custom, retrofit installations with Chevrolet Performance crate engines and is rated at 700 lb.-ft. maximum torque capacity - no wonder it’s the choice of so many cars such as the Z/28.

We had a chance to talk with Sampsel on the development of the product, “Guys were trying to bolt up the T56, but had to remove the bolt in the 12 o’clock position because of improper fitment. That obviously wasn’t going to work so we developed the Bell Housing with the proper block plate and bolt pattern to solve the problem.”

The Bell Housing Kit (p/n: 19329620) for LS and LT engines is an SFI-certified steel bell housing that includes a Block-Save Plate and attaching hardware. Sampsel continued, “It’s ready to race right out of the box being that it’s SFI-certified for higher RPM applications running for extended periods of time.”

Chevrolet Performance used this exact bell housing when working with NASCAR Sprint Cup champion and driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet SS, Jimmie Johnson. His stunning 1971 Corvette resto-mod features, you guessed it, an LT1 with T56 Super Magnum six-speed transmission. Sampsel said the project would not have been possible without the Super Magnum bell housing (p/n: 19329620), which is part of their transmission installation kit (p/n: 19329912). These manual transmission installation kits include the bell housing as well as the clutch kit (p/n: 19329635) making installation a cinch with any of Chevrolet Performance’s crate engines.

Jimmie Johnson said the car is unique because of its mix of traditional elements and modern day touches. Read more about his ’71 Vette, its unveil at SEMA, and check out the build photos, here.
