Vehicle Spotlight: The ’78 E-Rod Silverado

Amongst some of the amazing 2014 Chevrolet Silverado concepts at SEMA 2013, one truck in particular had people milling about trying to catch a glimpse. However, this truck wasn't a 2014. In fact, it wasn't even from this century. This classic Chevrolet pickup of yesteryear that had attendees and media, alike, wide-eyed with excitement was the 1978 E-Rod Silverado, brought to life by Special Vehicles Project Manager, Gary Mulder, and his excellent team.

We had a chance to catch up with Gary and here's what he had to say about this one-of-a-kind Chevy truck.

“The '78 Silverado with the E-Rod system is really such a feel-good truck.” Gary told us. “Personally, I started working with General Motors back in ’78, so it definitely takes me back to day one, so to speak. But what we found when talking to some of our employees and customers was that a lot of people could relate to this truck, as so many people owned one of these or knew somebody who owned one in the past. People are inclined to remember the good times, and a lot of the people we talked to about this truck were reminded of their past. They looked at it and it brought a smile to their face.”

And it definitely brought a smile to our faces as Jim Campbell unveiled the truck at the SEMA 2013 Monday Media Event. "Our team had a great time working on this resto-mod at our shops.” Jim elaborated, “The team disassembled the entire truck to the bare frame and powder coated, reconditioned or replaced every single part.”

But a resto-mod by definition requires more than just restoration. Jim revealed, “There's more to this story. Under the hood we used one of our E-Rod Crate Powertrain systems including the LC9 5.3L V8 with 336 horsepower, nearly double the horsepower of the truck's original small block.”

The Connect & Cruise system offers customers a comprehensive package for updating or restoring their vehicles while maintaining emissions compliance and ease of installation. “There are a countless number of these trucks still out on the road and people are starting to restore them. Our Connect & Cruise Crate Powertrain system can give them modern power in these older model trucks.” Gary reinforced.
